It’s Official - Expressway Cycle Race Date Now Confirmed

Full details including links to enter online are on this page

Race Day On The Expressway

Saturday 18th of February - 8:30am

Please note that this event is being run by the Cycling Club and is separate to the Kāpiti Coast ExpressDay celebration that the Mackays to Peka Peka Alliance is running on the same day, from 10am-3pm.

Ladies and Gentleman, get ready to roll!

The Kāpiti Cycling Club are pleased to confirm the once only, never to be repeated opportunity to race on the new MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway, is good to go.

A wonderful aspect of this event is not only that you'll be able to ride on a section of the brand spanking new Expressway before it's opened to traffic, but the event will also be raising money, with a portion of the entry fee going to charities supported by the MacKays to Peka Peka Alliance.

Race start times and distances on the 8.4k circuit are as follows…

Start Time

Number of Laps

Total Distance

A 8:30am 7 58.8kms
B 8:35am 6 50.4kms
C 8:40am 5 42kms
D 9:00am 4 33.6kms
Rec Race 9:30am 2 16.8kms

Entry Fee’s and Race Conditions

A, B, C and D Grade    $45.00

Rec Race Grade   $30.00

For safety reasons rec race grade entrants are restricted to riders 15 years of age or older. Junior club riders can ride in the appropriate grade.  A racing licence is not required for this closed road event.

The idea of the rec race grade is to give non competitive people a taste of racing on the safest and smoothest of race circuits.

The Kāpiti Cycling Club race event is running generally south of Kāpiti Road between Kāpiti Road and Poplar Ave.

The ExpressDay that is being run by the Mackays to Peka Peka Alliance is taking place on the sections north of Kāpiti Road from 10pm till 3pm. As part of the ExpressDay people will be able to ride their bikes on a 5km section of the shared pathway/cycle path that sits alongside the Expressway. So if you want to ride on the Expressway itself, then our event is for you.

We think the perfect plan would be to ride in the event with us, and then drift north (from where where our race ends) after you've finished and check out everything else that's on offer at the ExpressDay. You can check out the details of the ExpressDay here...

Online entries (and payment) for our event close Friday 17th February at 7pm.

You can pay a late entry on the day, but late entries will incur an additional $25 for all grades

(There is a massive amount of interest and we don't want a large number of people entering (or paying) on the day, hence the steep late fee.)

We've had an unprecedented amount of interest in this event and hence numbers may need to be capped, so please enter early to ensure you are not disappointed.

In the unlikely event of the races being cancelled no refunds will be given.  There is the provision of a postponement in which case the event will be held the following day on the 19th

Registration and Parking

Registration involves picking up your commemorative race number and us checking you've paid your race fee and confirming your grade.

There are 2 ways to Register. Either the evening before, or on the day.  Please register the day before if you are able, to ease congestion for us and to give yourself more time on the day of the race.

You can register in the foyer of the Kāpiti Library (on Iver Trask Place, Paraparaumu) between 4pm and 7pm on Friday the 17th February. For those that don't have the ability to pay online you can also pay your entry fee (but please enter online first so we have your name and grade in the system already).

On the day registration and parking will be at the end of Te Roto Drive Paraparaumu. Turn off Kāpiti Road and follow Te Roto Drive until you get to the Fonterra Factory.

We've been allocated 400 parks on the large grass field opposite the factory, once these are filled parking on the streets is available.

Follow the signs to the registration marque at the rear of the field near the Expressway.

Registration on the day will be open from 7:15am and will close at 9am.

The only way to access the circuit will be via the registration on Te Roto Drive.  Once you have registered (either on the day or the evening before), show your race number and that will allow you straight through and onto the circuit.

Spectators are very welcome but must be on site before 9am.  All spectators must access the site via the registration on Te Roto Drive.

Good question - though Sunday looks about the same as Saturday...

From the Race Manager - we will make the call in the morning. It will need to be extremely windy to postpone, and its all go in the rain. If we had to postpone it, we would make the call by 8am and put this up on our website and facebook. Thanks

People coming from Wellington will be leaving by 6:30am Is it possible to advise go or no go by 6:30am?
#5 Andrew Anson 2017-02-17 21:32
Understand that Neil. We would look to communicate any change of plan as early as possible but no later than 8am, but honestly there is nothing in today's weather, or the forecast for tomorrow, to suggest there is any likelihood of us needing to communicate any change of plan. See you tomorrow!
