Kapiti Cycling Club - Southwards Summer Circuit Series 15th December 2020

The final event of 2020 turned out to be stunner, ideal cycling conditions with a festive theme and a big turnout enabled for a successful evening.

First event was the 20 minutes plus two laps Social Circuit, the event for the first time this season was dominated by five youngsters (Under 15) all vying for glory. This changed the balance somewhat for the event with the social circuit riders taking a back seat against the young guns. We will introduce a separate event for the youngsters in the new year.

With two novice riders on the start line, Dylan Kennedy (on a borrowed bike and sand shoes) and Maggie Graham (Richards daughter) the five juniors largely stayed together with the four more senior riders until the final laps when Euan once again proved his strength taking the honours from Dylan. Peter, Christine, and Judith rode strongly to finish close behind.

The next event was the C/D Grade with twelve riders taking to the start line including Dave Downer (recovering from his serious accident-great to see you back Dave). The twenty-five minute plus two lap race proved once again to be a fast and aggressive race. Tony set a high pace and soon distanced himself from the peloton, chasing hard, John, Dave, Euan, and Gill worked tirelessly to close the ever increasing gap but to no avail. Tony took out a decisive win (B Grade for you Tony next year)

The final event of the evening was the battle for honours in A/B Grade over a 30 minute plus two lap race. With a large field of fifteen riders, it was odds on for a battle royale which did not disappoint. The pace kicked off immediately with Miles blasting at the front closely followed by Katie. The lead chopped and changed mainly between three riders, Katie, Miles and newcomer Tom Gollins (welcome Tom) which eventually saw the elastic break from the rest. The intrepid trio built up a commanding lead slowly gaining a lap on the peloton which also contained some strong riders desperately trying to reduce the trio’s advantage. Miles, Katie and Tom caught the peloton over the closing laps. As the final lap bell was rung Tom and Katie created a short break over Miles who chased desperately to close the gap. Tom took out the win from Katie with Miles crossing the line for third. A very exciting race.
