North Island Cycle Race Series – Race 5 – Sunday 29th November 2020

The final race in the five-race series did not disappoint in the quality of the racing despite the cold and very wet conditions. The 85 km course from Henley Lake, Masterton to a turn around at the foot of Dryers Rock then out towards Bidiford before a hectic sprint on the outskirts of Masterton.

The 2020 format for the series significantly changed the dynamic of the racing, previously a solely masters series, the change to allow open grades made racing hard with 50-60 plus age masters against much younger riders. Not exactly a level playing field.  Despite this change Kapiti has performed well in the series playing a role in ensuring that the racing was hard and exciting.

Race five proved to be a successful finale for Team Kapiti, with only three riders fronting up in the rain, Richard Graham (competed in all five races) Miles Davies and Sam Fisher the trio ensured that they played an important part in keeping the pace fast. The peloton largely stayed intact until the closing kilometres when the increased pace saw the stronger sprinters coming to the fore. Prominent in the final was Miles vying strongly for the win, the awfully close finish saw Miles taking an excellent fourth, closely followed by Sam in 11th with Richard completing the Kapiti trio in 19th providing an excellent finish to the series.

Well done Miles, Sam, and Richard. Also, thanks to Howard for his service support throughout the series.
