Spring Series Sponsored by:Howard Co Logo Black

Fast and exciting racing took place in Masterton today in the 3rd round of the North Island Series.

With two races scheduled for the 3rd round it was always going to be a long & demanding day.

Kapiti’s Cat 4 team day started early with a 9.30am starting gun in the opening race of the day, a criterium race around a 1km closed circuit. With 50x riders lining up in the Cat 4 grade, Kapiti was well represented with 7x riders (4-new to our club...Ian Riddle, Ian Cooke, Bruce Edgar and Mike Harding).

A perfectly timed 2-man attack by Ian Riddle and Lee Pownall with 3-laps to go almost secured 4th and 5th placing, only yielding with 300-meters to go. Even with challenging head winds the race average was a very strong 39km/hour. Very competitive riding, in very tight quarters and testament to the bike handling skills by all riders and all the teams.

The 2nd race of the day was a team time trial. An out and back again 15.33km. The race of truth is just that, there is no hiding – this was a tough ride. The outward leg was a very fast 47km average, helped by a tail wind and slightly descending gradient. The back again leg was into a headwind and giving up all the descending kms we gratefully banked on the outward leg. Simply to say it was a tough, on limit ride for 24-minutes. The entire team contributed to a very satisfying 37.7km average.

Many comments from the KCC team…this was the most enjoyable day of racing…can’t wait to race again…when can we do this again...

A big thanks to Jorge (race organizer) and all the competing clubs for the laughs, banter and camaraderie.
