North Island Masters Team Race Series

Race One – 22nd September 2019.

The first race of the five-race series kicked off in Featherston around a lap of Lake Featherston, an 80km circuit. A beautiful day greeted the riders, no wind and not a cloud in the blue sky presented perfect conditions for the race.

Team Kapiti M3 lined up with five riders for the race, Neil Harwood, Richard Graham, Andrew Anson, Gary Clareburt and Mark Humphries. Unfortunately, our sixth rider Peter Wilkinson was ruled out with sickness.

The forty strong peloton set off at a brisk pace down the Western Access Road, the riders mainly staying together. An untimely early puncture for Richard was a setback, a quick wheel change and a very determined chase through the numerous vehicles now being held up on the narrow roads was not what Richard needed but eventually he made contact with the peloton. A four person break which included Mark was briefly away as the race made its way towards Martinborough.

As the race exited Martinborough still very much together, a touch of wheels caused several riders to crash heavily with Mark being the unfortunate victim of a badly injured arm, severe road rash and numerous abrasions. Mark was transported to Masterton Hospital by ambulance for further treatment. A very disappointing outcome for Mark after playing a key role for the team.

A lone break in the closing kilometres by Oliver Ferry enabled him to secure the win, Team Kapiti hotly contested the sprint for second, team result below. Overall an excellent start for the team earning key team points to secure third team overall despite the two setbacks.

The next race is in two weeks, hopefully the team will be able to field a full complement.
