NI Race Series – Race 5

The grand finale of the very successful NI Road Race series held over in the Wairarapa was held on Sunday in ever changing conditions. Kapiti Cycling Club was once again strongly represented with two teams, M2 and M3.

Team Kapiti was lying 3rd in the M3 Team classification two points ahead of 4th. The main aim in race 5 was to retain our team position against our closest rivals despite being up against teams with eight riders, we had four. The route followed a similar profile as the last race although not as hilly. The Team plan was to protect the 3rd team position at all costs and endeavour to get into the top three riders over the finish line to gain bonus points.

An early break featured Peter with the remaining trio keeping a watching brief in the peloton. The action increased significantly after the turn for home with several breaks before two riders gained a good gap which was soon bridged by the series leader, no one in the break posed a problem to our game plan. The thirty second gap gained by the duo was quickly shortened as the peloton passed the three kilometres to go sign, it was at this point that Greg suffered an untimely puncture taking him out of the picture for the sprint.

Excellent team work from the remaining three Team Kapiti riders enabled Peter to cross the line third with Andrew hot on his heels, Richard was slightly further back in the fast finishing pack having completed his role.

An outstanding effort in the five-race series by Team Kapiti especially against teams fronting with eight riders on a regular basis against our reduced size.

Provisional Results:

3rd Peter Wilkinson

5th Andrew Anson

12th Richard Graham

Greg crossed the line behind the main peloton after a wheel change.

The team took out third team overall, an amazing effort which certainly bodes well for 2019, well done Team Kapiti.

Confirmed results will be published for both teams once released by the organiser.
