This is a lovely scenic ride I did last Saturday with the Kiwi Randonneurs - "The Pahiatua Delight".  It started from Martinborough at 6:00 am, went through Masterton and Alfredton to the Pongoroa Pub, where I stopped for a Kiwi Burger and chips (but no beer).  Then over the range to Pahiatua and down through Eketahuna and Masterton back to Martinborough, mainly taking the back-roads.  A pretty strong wind at times and I was pretty tired the last 100 km, but a most enjoyable day.  I would really recommend these rides.  Have a look at the Kiwi Randonneurs website to find out more.  And, if you're interested, here's my ride report:
